“Helping” others to get viral social media content
This kind of social media content drives me nuts. It comes up a lot on TikTok. People will film themselves giving money or supplies to homeless people and it will get tons of likes and views.
Or people will surprise servers with a big tip. And film it.
It’s sucks that the people getting help have to be in a video to get it. Like why not just give to be kind?
And then there’s all the “feel-good” news stories that are really more sad than anything.
Like this one about an 82 year old who only got to retire because a random customer decided to make a TikTok about him. Getting to enjoy life shouldn’t be based on dumb luck. And what if Warren wasn’t likable? Then he just would never get to retire.
I’ve seen the argument that this kind of content is good because it encourages more people to help. It may encourage more content creators to help. If they didn’t get any photos or videos from it, I’m curious how many of them would help. But content creators are a pretty small demographic.
