I've followed pretty much the same approach and hope to learn more as well. My kids are both little and I've been using they/them with their friends sometimes because there is less following of the expected ways for boys and girls to dress. My oldest wears purple glasses because he likes the color and that's often enough for people to assume he's a girl.
