One of my Favorite Standup Jokes
It’s also probably my dumbest.
It’s also one of my most popular jokes, but in case you haven’t heard it here’s audio of one of my recent performances:
I love it because there’s nothing funny about the actual joke.
One day early on in my standup career I was experimenting with saying things as if they were jokes when really they were not. This bit’s made appearances in my routine for a decade now, because of how people react to it.
The reactions I’ve gotten to this “joke” are all over the board.
Sometimes the audience will laugh as if it truly is a funny joke. Sometimes it even feels like a genuine laugh. Sometimes it feels like they are faking the laugh to try to get me to move on without hurting my feelings.
In the example above I got lots of ‘woo’s.
Sometimes they laugh at my explanation of why the joke is supposedly funny.
Often it’s pretty much silence, but I’ve built up tension for whatever the next joke is. Following it…
