After I got divorced and became a single mom to two young kids, I eventually decided it would be best to sell the four bedroom house and instead move into a one bedroom apartment.

My mom did similar when she and my dad got divorced so this sort of transition was familiar to me.

There are a few drawbacks, but overall I’m preferring the apartment at least for the time being.

CONS:

  • Lack of private spaces

This can be tricky if one kids is wanting to play all by themselves.

  • More of a hassle to play outside

With the house we could just go out and play in the yard and we were an easy walk to several nice parks.

  • Parking can be a pain
  • Worry about bothering neighbors if we’re noisy

You can be as loud as you want in a house.

  • Rent increases

PROS:

  • Less to clean
  • More centrally located

I love being closer in to the city rather than in the suburb. I can take public transportation or walk to a lot of the places I routinely go.

  • Maintenance issues are simpler to resolve
