TikTok is mostly known for silly dance crazes, so I was surprised to find something on there that radically changed my worldview.

Usually when I hear about adoption it’s talked about as a wonderful thing. Saving a child from a bad circumstances. It’s also discussed as an option with fertility issues.

When my now ex wife and I were looking into having children we did consider adoption, but eventually decided against it. This was largely because she had heard stories of people being adopted and then the birth families not being happy with that scenario. This sounded like a stressful situation to navigate.

We ended up instead using a sperm donor and I got pregnant with both of our children. My ex wife picked the sperm donor that sounded the most like herself.

Until I heard stories from people who’ve been adopted, I had considered adoption a viable option.

Having worked in a daycare previously, I have no doubt that people who adopt often love their children just the same as people who have children biologically. I was surprised when becoming a parent that my own kids did not feel to me all that different than the kids I had cared for in the daycare. A child is a child.
