We Should Attack Climate Change like a Ketchup Company

Like many people I recently watched Don’t Look Up and am sad now.

I stayed up not all night, but a couple hours pondering what would actually work to help climate change?

I got to thinking about another thing I watched recently: The Food That Built America, specifically the story of Henry Heinz. First I thought about how weird it must be to have the last name Heinz and not know yet that your name means ketchup.

Then I thought about how Heinz pushed for the Pure Food and Drug Act which seems to me an overall positive thing, but he did it because he was able to follow the guidelines and didn’t think his competitors would be able to. Thus making him the ketchup champion.

I was also thinking about a study I heard of where people are significantly more likely to be saving for retirement if they are automatically enrolled rather than having to opt in. I doubt many people are against retirement, but remembering to sign up can be hard.

Essentially people are lazy and greedy, but still underneath that are good and want to be responsible and do good things. I think this is true of a lot of people anyway.

Stress makes it hard to do the responsible thing, even if you’re aware of what the good thing to do is. You can’t think years ahead…
